Your furnace quit. We're still awake.

$89 to diagnose, waived with same-visit repair. A person in Grand Rapids answers at 3 a.m., not a call center.

What happens after you hang up.

This is a real February call log, times rounded. It is the only thing that matters at midnight, so it is the first thing on this page.

11:42
You call. Sheila picks up on the second ring. She is in the office on Plainfield Ave, not a national answering service. She asks three questions: is anyone in the house unwell, do you smell gas, and what is the thermostat reading.
11:46
She tries the free fix first.Roughly one call in six is a tripped breaker, a switched-off service switch, or a filter so loaded the limit switch cut out. If that is your night, she talks you through it and you keep your $89.
11:51
Ray gets the page. Two techs are on call every night from October through April. You get the tech's name and truck before he leaves.
12:24
Truck 4 is in your driveway.Median winter response inside the service radius is 41 minutes. Boot covers on, work light out, panel off.
12:38
You get the price before the wrench.Written, on the spot, parts and labor. You say yes or you say no and pay the $89. Nobody sells you a new furnace at midnight.
12:55
Ignitor replaced. Burners lit. $214.He stays until the second full cycle completes and the supply air is over 100°. The $89 comes off the bill.

Tell us what it's doing and we'll tell you what it costs.

Real installed prices in Kent County, parts and labor, 2026. Not a range so wide it means nothing. If your repair falls outside these, we tell you why before we start.

It runs, but the air is cold
Usually a failed hot-surface ignitor or a flame sensor coated in oxide. The blower is fine; nothing is lighting.
$145–$290
Nothing happens at all
Breaker, door switch, transformer, or control board, in that order of likelihood and cost. Two of the four are free to fix over the phone.
$0–$960
It lights, then quits after a few minutes
Short cycling. Nine times out of ten it is the flame sensor; the rest is a blocked flue or a failing limit switch. Do not keep resetting it.
$145–$310
Grinding, squealing, or a hard rattle
Blower motor bearings or the draft inducer. Catch it early and it is a motor; leave it and it takes the wheel and the housing with it.
$460–$820
You smell gas, or the CO alarm is going
Do not call us first. Leave the house with everyone in it, then call DTE at 800-947-5000 from outside. We come after they clear it, and we will not charge the diagnostic on that visit.
Leave first. Then call.

Prices include the part, the labor, and the trip. Weekend and overnight calls do not carry a surcharge; we decided a long time ago that charging more for a Sunday was a bad way to keep customers for thirty years.

Eight parts fix four out of five no-heat calls.

So every truck carries all eight, in duplicate, from the first of October. The difference between a fixed furnace and a return visit on Thursday is usually just whether the part was already in the van.
